Styling Tips

The beauty of hair is its malleability. Today you may want a casual wavy look, tomorrow a sleek ‘do. Maybe you change your part regularly, or have bangs that can either come forward or get pushed to the side or be totally combed back.

If you use a styling aid without a blowdryer, your hair may dry flatter because of the weight of the product, and it will stay flatter. If you use a blowdryer without a styling aid, you may start out with the shape you want but it may not hold.

If you comb your hair against the way it grows out of your scalp, generally it lifts up off of the head. This is important to remember especially at the crown of the head where you may want to smooth the hair down over the whirl – if you comb all of your hair back, you may get a bump above the whirl and flatness below.

Think of the hair as fiber or cloth, and think of the blowdryer as a clothing iron: if you want it smooth, you press it flat. If you want a crease, you fold or bend the fiber before applying heat. Think of styling aids as fabric starch. Vary which brush you use and how you direct it.

It is not necessary to always use your blowdryer on a low setting as long as you keep it moving. Hair fibers can burn just as cloth fibers can. Sometimes you need the high heat and sometimes you need the stronger air flow. Just keep it moving (this is great for arm muscles too). Dry the root of the hair first, remembering in which direction you’ll want it to stay, which may vary around the head. To make sure that your efforts are not in vain, dry your hair completely. However, to make your look more casual, leave in the last bits of moisture.

Use your imagination and have fun!
